The expertise of the nuclear complex

AFCEN publishes rules compiling the industrial and regulatory requirements applicable to nuclear power plants. These publications give customers and their safety authorities a convenient access to the applicable rules. RCC codes are published both in French and in English and are internationally recognised.

AFCEN - AREVA - EDFThey have also been instrumental to a better understanding of French and European standards in other countries. The RCC codes provide an important channel for disseminating information regarding French nuclear technology and form the technical foundation for major export contracts.

As such, construction codes constitute the technical reference basis for contracts concluded between operators and manufacturers, both in France and in the export market, and also between manufacturers and their many suppliers and sub-contractors.

They define best practice in accordance with French regulations via appropriate appendices and play an essential role in the enforcement of these regulations. The RCC codes also serve as an instrument for technology transfer and their use as an educational tool is important to the success of the applications to which they apply.

This body of knowledge, comprising rules, standards and codes, is an essential pillar of the industry. Enshrining as it does the know-how and expertise that underpins power plant safety, it requires constant attention and updating. It goes without saying that codes and standards of this nature form a reference basis without which it would be impossible to implement a quality assurance program.

The rules and codes applicable specifically to nuclear energy will continue to evolve in order to cater for future changes in the regulatory framework and the influx of requirements resulting from operating feedback, technology progress and changes in industrial standards.
